  • Dr. Maria Luisa Villanueva-Peñacarrillo leads the group that first described the insulin-like effect of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) on hydrocarbon, lipid, and bone metabolism in peripheral tissues in healthy individuals, and its mechanisms of action. Several important scientific studies have been published based on this finding.
  • Doctor Pedro Esbrit Argüelles is one of the top 10 experts in the world in the study of the pathophysiology of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTH-rP) (www.biomedexperts.comThis link opens in a popup window), for which he received the 2006 award from the Iñigo Alvarez de Toledo Kidney Foundation.
  • Professor Adela Rovira Loscos has worked on the mechanism of action of insulin and the interactions of this hormone with sulfonylureas, thyroid hormones, and PPAR-gamma agonists. Her studies have led to important publications in the fields of diabetes and endocrinology and several doctoral theses.
  • Professor Mercedes Ruíz Moreno pioneered the introduction of parenteral nutrition in children and adolescents, and has conducted important research into breastfeeding and lipid metabolism, and the diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis in children. For her long and fruitful career in science she received the 1996 Rey Jaime I award for Research in Clinical Medicine.
  • For his research on the pathophysiological role of ghrelin peptide in children (description of expression levels from the neonatal period through to adulthood in normal and pathological situations, including obesity, anorexia, and diabetes) Professor Leandro Soriano Guillén has received significant national and international attention. This line of research has led to several publications in premier journals in the field of pediatrics.
  • Professor Pedro Mata López is known internationally for his descriptions of the effects of dietary fatty acids on lipid profiles and other processes including LDL oxidation, smooth muscle cell proliferation, and monocyte adhesion. This line of research has produced important international publications and the FDA has endorsed the beneficial effect of olive oil based on the findings of this research group. Currently, the group directed by Professor Mata is participating in the development of the world's first biochip for the detection of familial hypercholesterolemia. This finding has resulted in a Spanish patent and has been marketed as a diagnostic test.
  • The work of Dr. Carmen Garcés Segura has received particular attention for her research into the genetic determinants and environmental factors related to cardiovascular risk factors such as altered lipid levels and obesity from childhood through to adulthood. This work has resulted in several doctoral theses and publications in highly prestigious international journals.
