Summary of activity

The group’s main research lines comprise both basic and clinical studies on HIV infection, with a particular focus on investigating the mechanisms underlying viral persistence and latency, the factors associated with viral control, the role of chronic inflammation, and the interactions between HIV infection and cancer. The group is also actively involved in the evaluation of novel antiretroviral therapies and HIV vaccine candidates. In addition, the Group conducts clinical research in other areas of infectious diseases and tropical medicine, contributing to the advancement of knowledge, diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of infectious conditions.

Contributions to society

The scientific knowledge generated by our group represents a significant contribution to addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable populations affected by HIV infection, other infectious diseases and cancer. Through rigorous research, collaboration with patient associations, and the promotion of preventive education initiatives, we actively contribute to improving public health outcomes and reducing health inequalities from a social justice perspective. Our work supports the development of innovative strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, while also enhancing the quality of life of affected individuals. By fostering knowledge transfer and engagement with healthcare professionals, patients and the wider community, the group seeks to maximise the societal impact of its research and contribute to evidence-based healthcare policies and practices.

Collaborations

The group actively collaborates with both intramural research teams across all institutions comprising IIS-FJD and with external groups at the national and international levels.
