Gender perspective
Summary of activities
Advances in breast cancer research, together with increased patient awareness, have significantly improved the diagnosis, treatment and survival rates associated with this disease. However, current therapies remain ineffective for a substantial proportion of patients, highlighting the need for further improvements in both survival and quality of life. Our Molecular Pathology group is dedicated to cancer research, particularly breast cancer, and has made important contributions to understanding the mechanisms underlying resistance to specific anticancer therapies.
The group focuses on two main objectives: identifying robust biomarkers capable of predicting resistance to current treatments and developing new therapeutic strategies to overcome resistance to first-line therapies. In recent years, the group has investigated mechanisms of treatment resistance and identified new therapeutic approaches, with particular emphasis on the role of the tumour microenvironment and specific cellular populations in determining treatment efficacy. In addition, the group collaborates extensively with other research teams to uncover new biological mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.
The group is also actively involved in clinical trials evaluating new drugs and therapeutic approaches in patients, and its research has been instrumental in the design of innovative clinical studies. Beyond its research activities, the group plays an important role in the management of biological samples and the coordination of research initiatives, always with the aim of improving the care and treatment of patients with breast cancer.
In parallel, the group is actively engaged in the study of lymphoma biology, with a particular focus on T-cell lymphomas. Its research projects are aimed at identifying prognostic biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets that may contribute to improved patient outcomes.
Contributions to society
In 2025, our group published several scientific articles on the molecular mechanisms underlying tumour resistance and presented its findings at national and international conferences, as well as at educational forums and patient association events. Several doctoral theses are currently being conducted within the laboratory, which also hosts students, medical residents and research fellows.
The group actively participates in patient groups, patient associations and cooperative breast cancer research networks. Clinically relevant findings are disseminated through these channels whenever appropriate. In addition, the group is a member of CIBERONC (Center for Biomedical Network Research on Cancer), which further enhances the visibility and dissemination of its research outcomes.
The investigators leading these projects are strongly committed to communicating research findings to society, with the aim of increasing public awareness of this disease and of advances that may contribute to improving patient outcomes. The Group collaborates closely with patient organisations such as AECC, GEPAC, FECMA and AECMM, and regularly participates in public forums and meetings organised by these associations.
The group also collaborates with the INVI Male Breast Cancer Association, incorporating a gender perspective into its research on a disease that, although predominantly affecting women, can also occur in men.
Collaborations
During 2025, the group established and maintained collaborations with several national and international research teams through high-impact research projects funded by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), the Community of Madrid and European programmes. Within the Fundación Jiménez Díaz Health Research Institute (IIS-FJD), the group worked closely with numerous research groups, both within the Cancer Area and across other research programmes. In addition, the group is a member of CIBERONC (ISCIII's Cancer Research Network Biomedical Research Centre), GEICAM and GEMCAD.
These collaborations have enabled significant scientific advances. The group has identified a new mechanism with potential applications in combating breast cancer and has developed experimental models that improve our understanding of how certain tumours acquire resistance to standard therapies. Furthermore, the group has made important contributions to the coordination of innovative clinical trials, with the goal of improving treatment outcomes and the quality of life of patients.
