Summary of activities
The Group focuses on the prevention, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the heart, pericardium, great vessels and peripheral vascular system, as well as on the development of new techniques, procedures and medical devices for their management.
More specifically, its activities encompass the study and surgical treatment of disorders affecting the heart, pericardium and thoracic great vessels; acquired and congenital heart diseases manifesting in adulthood; coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and thoracic aortic disorders. The group is also actively involved in the development and application of endovascular therapies for the treatment of thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms, lower and upper limb ischaemia, carotid artery disease and other vascular conditions, with the aim of improving patient outcomes through innovative and minimally invasive approaches.
Contributions to society
Through the development of new techniques and treatments, the group aims to improve the quality of life of patients with cardiovascular diseases by implementing surgical procedures that are safer, more effective and less invasive.
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION:
- Dr Gonzalo Aldámiz-Echevarría has coordinated the cardiovascular cooperation programme in Africa of the NGO Recover Foundation - Hospitals for Africa (Burkina Faso and Cameroon) since 2008. This initiative includes on-site collaboration in patient diagnosis and follow-up, as well as the surgical treatment of selected patients in Spain.
In addition, continuous training and specialization in the field of cardiac and vascular surgery are provided, contributing to improved patient care overall. In this regard, the following educational activities were carried out in 2025.

Collaborations
The group's activities require close collaboration among surgeons, cardiologists, biomedical engineers and other healthcare professionals to improve the effectiveness and safety of surgical interventions in the cardiovascular field.
Ongoing projects:
- Collaborators in the PLIANT II Registry, focused on the outcomes of iliac branch devices: César Aparicio Martínez, Alejandro González García and Ana Arribas Díaz.
In addition, the group collaborates with professionals from other healthcare institutions and academic centres to share knowledge and resources, thereby contributing to the advancement of vascular surgery. César Aparicio Martínez is Associate Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Madrid. Ana Arribas Díaz is Associate Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of Alfonso X el Sabio University. Ciro Baeza Bermejillo is Professor of Anatomy at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz School of Nursing (Autonomous University of Madrid).
