This strategic area comprises three research groups and two associated groups, with strong collaborative links between them. The Cardiology area has recently established a close collaboration with the Carlos III National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC), with both institutions jointly conducting experimental and clinical research projects under a collaboration agreement.

Its objectives include:

  • To advance the understanding of the mechanisms of injury and repair in renal, urological, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, including diabetes, across the lifespan, starting from childhood. Within this common framework, each group and subgroup focuses on specific aspects of these disorders, sharing expertise and technologies to accelerate scientific discovery and facilitate the translation of research findings into clinical practice.
  • To investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of selected diseases, including fibrosis, immune-inflammatory responses, apoptosis, intracellular signalling pathways, cytokines and the renin-angiotensin system, among others. These studies encompass conditions such as atherothrombosis, myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury, cardiomyopathies, diabetic kidney disease, hypertension, glomerular diseases, acute kidney injury, nephrotoxicity, obesity and diabetes
  • To apply advanced platforms and imaging technologies, including proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and molecular imaging, to identify novel molecules with diagnostic and therapeutic potential in the above-mentioned diseases.
  • To discover and undertake preclinical development of novel therapeutic approaches for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases, with the goal of their translation into clinical practice

In addition, there is substantial clinical research activity, including both observational studies and clinical trials sponsored by industry as well as investigator-initiated studies conducted by researchers from IIS-FJD and other institutions.

The Area maintains a wide network of collaborations with national and international investigators. Within IIS-FJD, close collaborations have been established with the Pathology, Haematology, Medical Oncology, Clinical Biochemistry, Infectious Diseases, Immunology, Microbiology, Rheumatology, Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Endocrinology, Digestive Surgery and Intensive Care research groups and departments.
