Summary of activities
The Department of Urology conducts research aimed at improving the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of both oncological and benign urological diseases. Its research activities integrate clinical trials, translational studies and innovation projects in surgery, pharmacology, medical devices and regenerative medicine. The group actively participates in studies designed to evaluate new therapeutic approaches, assess the efficacy and safety of surgical techniques, and explore tools that support the transition towards more precise, personalised and patient-centred medicine. In this context, the group is promoting several projects based on artificial intelligence to enhance clinical data analysis, optimise diagnostic processes, support therapeutic decision-making, and develop predictive models capable of anticipating the course of specific urological diseases. These activities facilitate the translation of scientific knowledge into clinical practice and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for highly prevalent and impactful urogenital disorders.
Contributions to society
Our research activity aims to translate scientific innovation into improved healthcare. Through clinical and translational research projects, we contribute to the development of new treatments, drugs, surgical techniques, diagnostic strategies and artificial intelligence-based digital tools, supporting a safer, more precise, more efficient and more personalised approach to medicine.
Moreover, part of our work is focused on improving the patient experience throughout the entire care pathway. We are involved in initiatives aimed at enhancing patient well-being, quality of life and support for individuals with urological diseases, incorporating technologies that facilitate follow-up, outcome prediction and shared decision-making.
The Department of Urology also participates in national and international collaborative networks, promoting knowledge exchange, the generation of scientific evidence and technology transfer for the benefit of patients and society.
Collaborations
The Department of Urology maintains an active network of collaborations with scientific societies, cooperative groups, foundations, hospital departments and academic institutions. These partnerships enable the development of multicentre studies, the promotion of new research lines and the advancement of knowledge in the field of genitourinary disorders.
The Department currently collaborates with a range of organisations and institutions, including:
- Spanish Association of Urology: Our research group is aligned with the objectives of the Spanish Association of Urology, which promotes multicentre research through its Multicentre Research Studies Platform. We participate in collaborative studies aimed at consolidating clinical data, evaluating treatments, developing national registries and improving patients' quality of life.
- Advanced Therapies Group of IIS-FJD: We collaborate in the development of innovative therapies for urinary incontinence through a regenerative medicine project based on mesenchymal stem cells.
- Foundation for research in Urology: We participate in a clinical study evaluating the treatment of high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder tumours with IMUNO BCG Moreau RJ.
- European Uro-Oncology Group: We collaborate in a Phase II clinical trial on upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma.
- UNICANCER, Health Cooperative Group: We participate in the ALBAN clinical trial, which evaluates the efficacy of atezolizumab in combination with BCG in patients with high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
In addition, the Department of Urology collaborates closely with the Departments of Oncology and Nephrology at Fundación Jiménez Díaz University Hospital (HUFJD) through the donation of biological samples for strategic research projects, including the TITANIA Study, focused on cancer diagnosis and therapies using multi-omics analysis, and the FJD-ENBIBA (European Nephrectomy Biobank) project.
