Innovation in Ophthalmology Group

Summary of activities

Over the past year, the Department of Ophthalmology has led two National Research Plan projects focused on the use of mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of ocular surface and corneal diseases. In addition, the Department has advanced the clinical application of high-resolution aberrometry for the assessment of optical quality in patients with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy and keratoconus. Within the field of visual optics, the impact of intraocular lens tilt and decentration on patients’ vision and refractive outcomes has been investigated through two studies involving more than 100 patients. One of these studies was conducted in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), leading to the establishment of a long-term partnership in this research area and participation in an additional National Research Plan project. This experience has enabled our optics subgroup to file a patent for a method to determine the optimal focal point in patients with irregular corneas. The project was selected to participate in the HealthStart Programme of the Community of Madrid, where it received an award in recognition of its innovative potential.

On the other hand, the Department has been actively involved in clinical studies on diseases such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), uveitis, retinitis pigmentosa and inherited retinal disorders. The multidisciplinary team has employed advanced diagnostic technologies and focused on late-phase clinical trials aimed at developing new therapeutic options. Notable studies include the PARASOL trial for AMD, the NOPROD registry for inherited retinal diseases, and the RPGR 021 and 022 gene therapy trials for retinitis pigmentosa. Additional studies have been conducted on uveitis and uveitis macular oedema. Furthermore, the department has provided continuous professional development and training for its staff to ensure the highest standards of patient care. Overall, the department remains a leading centre in ophthalmic research, advancing innovative therapies to improve patients’ quality of life.

Contributions to society

The group has actively collaborated with several patient associations, including AUEVEA, Retimur, ONCE and Retina Madrid, participating in patient education events and contributing to the development of educational and outreach materials

The group maintains formal collaborations with the Daza de Valdés Institute of Optics (CSIC) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM).
