Summary of activities

MEDIC is a research group focused on addressing clinical needs through science and technology. Our developments are always aimed at creating products that can be directly used in patients and/or transferred to industry with minimal modifications for commercialisation. The group also contributes to teaching activities in several courses within the bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and the bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering and Services at the School of Engineering of the Autonomous University of Madrid.

Contributions to society

More than two billion people worldwide do not have access to the spectacles they need. At MEDIC, we have developed low-cost technologies for eyeglass prescription, which are currently being commercialised by PlenOptika Inc. (USA and Spain) and Aurolab (India). We also work on the development of optoacoustic imaging technologies to address unmet clinical needs. Our systems can quantify the severity of different inflammatory dermatological diseases with a level of accuracy and reliability that exceeds that of traditional subjective clinical scoring systems.
