Summary of activities

The group investigates a wide range of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, cancer therapy-related cardiotoxicity, and amyloidosis, with the aim of advancing the understanding of their pathophysiology, enabling earlier diagnosis, improving cardiovascular risk prediction, and developing new therapeutic approaches. A major focus of the group's research is the improvement of secondary prevention strategies, particularly the identification of the most effective combinations of pharmacological therapies for patients who have experienced an acute myocardial infarction. Research activities also include the study of biomarkers capable of predicting future cardiovascular events, with particular emphasis on inflammation and mineral metabolism. In this context, the group investigates the effects of vitamin D on cardiovascular health and examines the real-world impact of PCSK9 inhibitors on the incidence of cardiovascular events. The group is also highly active in the field of primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on the role of cardiovascular imaging in the early detection of subclinical disease. Within this area, the Group has developed a pioneering research line aimed at improving understanding of the vascular component of Alzheimer’s disease and its relationship with atherosclerosis during asymptomatic stage.

Contributions to society

Our group places a strong emphasis on dissemination and outreach activities aimed at communicating research findings to both the public and patients. Borja Ibáñez is the inventor of four patents related to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and their diagnosis using magnetic resonance imaging. Dr Borja Ibáñez and Dr José Tuñón have also contributed to several clinical practice guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Dr Ibáñez has played a leading role as Chair of the ESC Guidelines for the management of acute coronary syndromes. Through these scientific, clinical and educational activities, the Group actively contributes to the translation of research findings into clinical practice and to improving cardiovascular health outcomes.

Collaborations

Our department participates in numerous national and international research projects. The large clinical trials led by the Group are primarily investigator-driven and scientifically oriented, although the Group also participates in studies sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry.

The Group coordinates several major European consortia funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020 programmes. Notable examples include the Horizon Europe ERA4Health projects STREAMLINE and HF4HF, as well as the Horizon 2020 health project RESILIENCE. The latter is coordinated by our Group, in collaboration with other hospital departments, including Haematology, and involves institutions from six European countries, together with the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), Philips, and a patient association. The Group also plays a prominent role as a key partner in the Horizon 2020 health project RITA-MI2, as well as in several Horizon Europe projects, including SGLT2HYPE, GRACE, COMPASS, and CHAIN. In addition, the Group leads the "LURK" project, funded by la Caixa Foundation, in the field of cardio-oncology. The Group coordinated the largest clinical trial ever conducted worldwide to evaluate the benefits of beta-blocker therapy in patients with myocardial infarction and preserved cardiac function (REBOOT trial, involving 8,500 patients in Spain and Italy). The findings of this study have influenced treatment recommendations for post-myocardial infarction patients worldwide. Borja Ibáñez serves as an editorial board member and editor for several leading cardiovascular journals, including the high-impact journals European Heart Journal and JAMA Cardiology. He also leads a research group within the CIBER on Cardiovascular Diseases (CIBERCV).
