Resumen de actividad

Estudiamos distintas patologías cardíacas (enfermedad coronaria, insuficiencia cardíaca, fibrilación auricular, toxicidad por tratamientos de cáncer, amiloidosis, etc.) para avanzar en el conocimiento de su fisiopatología, conseguir llegar a un diagnóstico precoz y una adecuada predicción del riesgo de sufrir eventos cardiovasculares y el desarrollo de nuevos tratamientos.

Estamos centrados en la mejora de la prevención secundaria, para encontrar la estrategia más óptima de combinación de fármacos para pacientes que han sufrido un infarto de miocardio. Trabajamos en el estudio de biomarcadores que puedan predecir el desarrollo de eventos cardiovasculares, particularmente en áreas de inflamación y metabolismo mineral, incluyendo el efecto de la vitamina D sobre el corazón, así como en el área del tratamiento del colesterol, en la que estudiamos el efecto de los inhibidores de PCSK9 sobre la incidencia de eventos cardiovasculares en vida real. Somos muy activos en el campo de la prevención primaria de enfermedad cardiovascular aterosclerótica, con énfasis en el papel de la imagen para detectar la enfermedad silente de manera precoz. En la línea de prevención primaria, tenemos una línea de investigación pionera que profundiza en el entendimiento del componente vascular de la enfermedad de Alzheimer y su relación con la aterosclerosis durante etapas asintomáticas. Parte de estos proyectos se abordan en conjunto con el Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovascular (CNIC), lo que permite hacer una investigación traslacional que abarca desde la parte básica de laboratorio, a la clínica aplicada a nuestros pacientes. El grupo posee además alta capacidad formativa de jóvenes investigadores incluyendo la dirección de múltiples Tesis doctorales y Trabajos de Fin de Grado.

Contribuciones a la sociedad

Nuestro grupo tiene un alto componente de difusión, orientado a dar a conocer al público general y a los pacientes los resultados de nuestras investigaciones. Borja Ibáñez es inventor de 4 patentes relacionadas con tratamientos para enfermedades cardiovasculares y su diagnóstico por resonancia magnética. Los Dres. Borja Ibáñez y José Tuñón han participado en diferentes guías de práctica clínica de la Sociedad Europea de Cardiología, destacando la posición del primero como coordinador de estas guías para el tratamiento del síndrome coronario agudo.

Colaboraciones

Nuestro Servicio participa en varios proyectos a nivel nacional e internacional. Los grandes ensayos clínicos que lideramos tienen una orientación puramente científica, si bien también participamos en ensayos relacionados con la industria farmacéutica. El grupo lidera grandes consorcios europeos financiados por la comisión europea a través de los programas Horizonte Europa y H2020. Destacan proyectos europeos coordinados por nosotros como los Horizon Europe ERA4Health "STREAMLINE" y "HF4HF" y el H2020 de salud "RESILIENCE". Este último es coordinado por nosotros, con la colaboración de otros servicios del hospital (Hematología), y donde participan centros de 6 países europeos además de la Sociedad Europea de Cardiología, Philips, y una asociación de pacientes. También tenemos participación destacada como socios destacados en otro H2020 de salud llamado RITA-MI2, y otros Horizon Europe como SGLT2HYPE, GRACE, COMPASS, y CHAIN. Lideramos un proyecto de salud de La Caixa en el campo de la cardiooncologia "LURK". El grupo ha liderado el ensayo más grande en el mundo testando el beneficio de betabloqueantes en pacientes con infarto y función cardiaca preservada (ensayo REBOOT, 8500 pacientes en España e Italia). Este ensayo ha modificado las pautas de tratamiento para pacientes post-infarto a nivel mundial. Borja Ibáñez es miembro del comité editorial y editor de varias revistas, destacando European Heart Journal y JAMA Cardiology como revistas de gran impacto, y lidera un grupo en el CIBER de enfermedades Cardiovasculares (CIBERCV).
