Summary of activities

Radiation Oncology is a medical specialty, with a specific scope in multidisciplinary management environments, dedicated to diagnostic aspects, clinical care, and more specifically therapeutic care of the oncological patient, primarily oriented to the use of radiation treatments and associated treatments. It is therefore a branch of clinical medicine that uses ionising radiation, alone or in combination with other therapeutic modalities, for the treatment of cancer and sometimes other non-neoplastic diseases.

Contributions to society

All scientific activities carried out by the Radiation Oncology group are directly aimed at benefiting patients and society. In recent years, advances in information technology have enabled major technological developments that have significantly improved the precision of radiation therapy treatments. These include three-dimensional imaging, automated segmentation of organs at risk, Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and Surface-Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT), all of which contribute to higher-quality treatment delivery.

These improvements in precision have made it possible to safely deliver higher radiation doses per fraction while accurately conforming the prescribed dose to the target volume and better sparing surrounding healthy tissues, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing treatment-related toxicity. Furthermore, treatment schedules have been substantially shortened, reducing the number of treatment sessions from 28-30 fractions to as few as 3-10 fractions in selected indications, while simultaneously increasing the biological effectiveness of treatment.

Collaborations

  • Medical Oncology:
    • Therapeutic combinations involving new drugs, targeted therapies and new radio sensitising agents for the local management of cancer. Current research programmes include next-generation immunotherapeutic agents for the treatment of lung cancer.
    • Combination strategies using chemotherapeutic agents, such as trabectedin together with radiotherapy, within the multidisciplinary management of soft tissue sarcomas.
  • Development and evaluation of predictors of treatment response to assess therapeutic efficacy in specific malignancies, including the use of radiomics in rectal and lung cancer.
  • Collaborative approaches involving Medical Oncology, Radiology and Digestive Surgery for organ preservation strategies and conservative management of rectal cancer.
  • Development and implementation of systems for process automation aimed at improving treatment efficiency, quality and patient safety.
