Sarcoma Unit
The Sarcoma Unit at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz and its network is a multidisciplinary and highly specialized Unit dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients with soft tissue sarcomas, bone sarcomas, and GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumors).
The main goal of our Unit is to provide patients with sarcomas with top-quality medical care in accordance with clinical practice guidelines. This includes accurate and comprehensive diagnosis (incorporating the necessary molecular diagnostic techniques), the most appropriate local treatment based on international recommendations, and the most personalized systemic therapy. We also ensure access to innovative treatment options through clinical trials.
The core of the Sarcoma Unit’s activity is the Sarcoma MDT, a multidisciplinary meeting held weekly. This committee includes specialists in Medical and Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Radiology, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, among others. All new sarcoma cases are discussed here, starting from clinical or radiological suspicion. The committee also reviews cases of known patients whose management requires the input of multiple specialists, in order to make coordinated and multidisciplinary therapeutic decisions.
The Medical Oncology team of the FJD-4H Sarcoma Unit is fully dedicated to the care of patients with sarcomas and has extensive experience not only in clinical care but also in research on this heterogeneous group of diseases.
Our team has national and international leadership in the design and coordination of academic clinical trials in sarcomas, which are essential for developing new therapeutic options in this field. One of our objectives is to offer the widest possible range of treatment options for our patients, including highly innovative experimental options through clinical trials.
Our team maintains numerous national and international research collaborations and currently coordinates the SELNET (Sarcoma European and Latin-American NETwork) International Consortium.
In addition, our Unit has a translational research laboratory, the Advanced Therapies and Biomarkers in Sarcomas Laboratory (ATBSARC), located at the Hospital de Villalba. In our lab, we conduct preclinical and translational research projects focused on:
- Deepening the understanding of the pathogenic basis of sarcomas
- Identifying prognostic and predictive factors in sarcomas
- Generating hypotheses to support the rationale for the development of new academic clinical trials for sarcoma patients, with a special focus on the tumor microenvironment and immunomodulatory strategies.
