Thoracic Oncology Unit
Fundación Jiménez Díaz - Comprehensive Lung Cancer Care
The Thoracic Oncology Unit at Fundación Jiménez Díaz, along with its 4H-network in Madrid (Hospital Universitario Rey Juan Carlos, Hospital Universitario General, Hospital Universitario Infanta Elena), offers specialized, multidisciplinary care for lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. Our primary objective is to provide high-quality, individualized care of the patients This comprehensive approach encompasses diagnosis, screening, treatment, and follow-up, adhering to national and international clinical guidelines.
Precise diagnosis is achieved through advanced molecular and genomic techniques, including immunohistochemistry, NGS, and liquid biopsy. Patients receive tailored local and systemic treatments and have access to innovative therapies via a broad portfolio of clinical trials for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), small-cell lung cancer (SCLC), and other thoracic cancers.
Multidisciplinary Approach:
A core component of the Thoracic Unit is its Multidisciplinary Tumour Board (MDT), comprising specialists from Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pneumology, Thoracic Surgery, Radiology/Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology, Molecular Biology, Palliative Care, and Geriatric Oncology. The extended MDT team include: psycho-oncology, nutrition, rehabilitation, and oncology nursing professionals. The MDT convenes weekly to collaboratively review and discuss every case, from initial suspicion to complex treatment decisions, including referrals from the RED 4H network and other hospitals. A dedicated Molecular Tumour Board also meets weekly to translate genomic findings into personalized therapeutic strategies.
Research and Innovation
The Thoracic Oncology team integrates clinical excellence with robust leadership in clinical and translational research. They actively participate in and coordinate numerous academic clinical trials (Phase I-III), providing patients’ access to innovative treatments not yet routinely available. The center has been a global pioneer in developing immunotherapy, chemo-immunotherapy, and targeted therapies for over a decade, contributing to pivotal trials in these areas. Currently, over 150 active clinical trials (Phases I-III) are recruiting patients.
Key research lines include:
- Molecular profiling of non-small cell lung cancer using next-generation sequencing, liquid biopsy in NSCLC
- Exploring new biomarkers usingin vivo PDX model studies in SCLC as Galectin-1 and therapeutic trials with Galectin-1 inhibitors and combinations with other drugs as lurbinectidin
Our findings have been published in high-impact journals, such as New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, JAMA Oncology, and Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Leadership
