Data update as of 01/10/2026

Area coordinator:

Research in the Cancer Area is carried out at three complementary levels: basic research, translational research and clinical research. The Cancer Area is made up of the Pathological Anatomy, Medical Oncology and Haematology groups, as well as two associated groups.

Its objectives include:

  • To improve understanding of genetic and protein alterations in solid and haematological malignancies.
  • To further investigate the mechanisms underlying resistance to current therapies, with a particular focus on the immune system and the tumour microenvironment, to identify new immunotherapeutic strategies.
  • To promote research into the tumour microenvironment through both drug development and clinical trials; to explore new technologies and approaches for its characterisation; and to evaluate strategies aimed at targeting the pro-tumorigenic microenvironment to maximise therapeutic benefit.
  • To identify, using prospective samples, tumour cell and immune biomarkers that may help distinguish patients most likely to benefit from next generation therapies.

Future challenges for the Cancer area

  • Development of alternative research models (humanised mice and organoids) to recreate different human tumour models across a broad spectrum of stages of tumorigenesis.
  • Development of new high-throughput diagnostic tools (next-generation sequencing and proteomics) and minimally invasive technologies (liquid biopsy and imaging) for cancer, aimed at patient stratification and disease monitoring.
