The main characteristic of this area is the broad spectrum of diseases and conditions it addresses, together with its strongly multidisciplinary nature.
Its objectives include:
- To investigate the mechanisms of cellular and tissue damage and repair associated with infectious, inflammatory and chronic diseases, including respiratory diseases, allergic and immune-mediated disorders, infectious diseases, and musculoskeletal disorders.
- To study the immunological and pathogenic aspects of HIV infection and viral hepatitis, with the goal of contributing to the development of strategies aimed at improving the control of these infections or achieving their complete eradication.
- To develop new proteomic and metabolomic analytical methodologies based on mass spectrometry for the identification of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in different diseases, facilitating their translation into clinical practice.
- To investigate COVID-19 infection from different perspectives, including its clinical impact in hospitalised individuals, disease severity in patients with respiratory disorders, viral and variant characterisation, and the role of different immune cell populations in the course of infection, among other aspects.

Gender perspective in the Infectious, Inflammatory and Chronic Diseases Area
The Infectious, Inflammatory and Chronic Disease area is made up of a group of professionals committed to respect and equality among its team members, which seeks to promote the professional development of all its personnel without discrimination based on gender or age.
Future challenges for the Infectious, Inflammatory and Chronic Diseases Area
- Identification of the molecular mechanisms, diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, and new therapeutic targets involved in inflammatory diseases through the application of proteomics, metabolomics and genomics, particularly in anaphylaxis, asthma and respiratory diseases.
- HIV infection research: studies on disease progression, functional cure models and the identification of potential therapeutic targets, as well as the impact of HIV and HCV coinfection on the host immune system.
- Bacterial infections and biomaterial-associated infections: development of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, including phage therapy and nanoparticle-based treatments, as well as the development of new vaccines and infection models.
- Synovial biopsy studies in chronic arthritis aimed at identifying tissue biomarkers of prognosis and treatment response. Application of musculoskeletal ultrasound as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in rheumatic diseases. Investigation of comorbidities associated with chronic arthritis and their relationship with inflammatory burden, including adipose tissue alterations, sarcopenia and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, together with their potential therapeutic implications.
- Clinical studies on the treatment of prevalent osteoporotic fractures and anatomical and embryological studies of shoulder anatomy with applications in surgery.
- Application of telemedicine and digital technologies to support healthcare delivery in low-resource settings.
- Innovation in big data and artificial intelligence for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious, inflammatory and chronic diseases.
