Cardiology
At Fundación Jiménez Díaz's Cardiology Service, we firmly believe that outstanding patient care and groundbreaking scientific research go hand-in-hand. That is why the "Cardiology Research Unit" (CRU) opened in 2015, overseen by the internationally renowned cardiologist Borja Ibáñez. This unit is integrated in the very heart of the cardiology service and coordinates its research activity. Located in the interventional cardiology area, the CRU has staff dedicated exclusively to research activities (cardiologists and nurses). Integration within the cardiology service means that research activity is present in the day-to-day running of the service, and all patients seen can benefit from the most innovative studies in the cardiovascular field. The CRU currently coordinates more than 10 randomised clinical trials, several of them led by cardiologists from our hospital. The CRU is actively involved in international consortia and, as a result, leads European Commission competitive projects related to cardiovascular research. The CRU works closely with the cardio-oncology unit (which the cardiology, oncology and haematology services at our hospital form part of), implementing its research. The CRU also has joint projects with other hospital services (including genetics, neurology and cardiac surgery). The CRU is the vehicle for an institutional agreement signed between Fundación Jiménez Díaz and the National Cardiovascular Research Centre (CNIC), a world leader in translational cardiovascular research. Thanks to this agreement, the CRU is able to introduce the latest findings from basic research in the clinic. The result of these research activities is a remarkable level of scientific productivity, with articles published in the most prestigious medical journals.
