With over 20 years of experience in oncological abdominal surgery, I have developed my career in leading hospitals, where I have also led the creation of specialized surgical oncology units. This background has provided me with a comprehensive view of the surgical management of complex hepatobiliary and peritoneal diseases.
- PhD in Medicine, University of Málaga
- Degree in Medicine and Surgery, University of Córdoba
- Residency in General and Digestive Surgery, Hospital 12 de Octubre, Madrid
• Hepatic, biliary and pancreatic surgery (open, laparoscopic and robotic)
• Oncological peritoneal surgery with HIPEC and PIPAC techniques
• Minimally invasive and robotic techniques applied to complex abdominal oncology
Research:
I lead several lines of research focused on developing new treatments for digestive and peritoneal cancer. I have served as principal investigator and promoter of the international Phase III clinical trial HIPECOVA, which evaluates the effectiveness of intraperitoneal chemotherapy with paclitaxel in advanced ovarian cancer. I also direct publicly funded projects exploring the local administration of collagenase ('chemical scalpel') as a novel strategy to facilitate tumor dissection and reduce postoperative adhesions. Currently, I am also working on promising approaches such as intraperitoneal CAR-T cell therapy for peritoneal metastases and the use of liquid biopsy biomarkers in liver and pancreatic cancer.
Teaching:
As part of my academic vocation, I serve as an Associate Professor in Health Sciences at the Department of Surgery of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), affiliated with the Clinical Teaching Unit at Fundación Jiménez Díaz. In this role, I teach both theoretical and practical classes to students in the Medicine and Biomedical Engineering degree programs.
I also lecture in official Master’s programs at both the UAM and TECH Global University. Additionally, I am actively involved in the training of residents in General and Digestive Surgery, serving as a tutor and mentor, particularly in the area of hepatobiliary surgery.
I have published 99 indexed articles in scientific journals, including 30 in Q1 journals and 7 in D1 journals. My current H-index is 19, with a total of 1,397 citations. I have supervised 5 doctoral theses and 8 undergraduate research projects, demonstrating a strong commitment to both scientific progress and academic training.
I have participated as a speaker in numerous scientific communications and presentations, both nationally and internationally. Below are some selected highlights:
- "Robotic approach to perihilar cholangiocarcinoma"
- Iberian Meeting of Experts in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery and Transplantation – May 27, 2025.
