Major outpatient surgery. Abdominal wall surgery

Major Outpatient Surgery (MOS) in the General Surgery and Digestive System Department was a pioneer in Spain and has played a key role in developing and extending surgical activity since the mid-1990s.

Operating as an independent unit in a separate physical facility from the main operating rooms, it ensures specialist care while maintaining high-quality standards and minimising disruption to the personal lives of patients and their accompanying family members, with this patient-centric approach resulting in a satisfaction rate exceeding 95%.

The MOS counts on highly experienced personnel who treat pathologies of the abdominal wall, proctology, soft tissue and cholecystectomies, always using the latest techniques (laparoscopy, stem cells, etc.).

Colorectal Surgery and Cell Therapy

Mission: To diagnose and treat patients with diseases of the colon, rectum and anus using the best available techniques.

Team: Highly skilled colorectal surgeons trained in prestigious speciality centres. All of them are currently working in prestigious hospitals in Madrid.

Technical resources available: All those which scientific evidence considers adequate at the time to diagnose and treat colorectal pathologies.

Most frequent pathologies: Bowel cancer. Haemorrhoids, fistulas and anal fissures. Incontinence and constipation. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, etc.).

Most important advanced surgical techniques:

  1. Treat complex fistulous pathology with all available surgical techniques, including Cell Therapy (use of stem cells) where appropriate.

  2. Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) in villous adenomas and early rectal cancers.

  3. Sphincter-sparing lower rectal cancer surgery (ultralow and intersphincteric resections).

  4. Surgery and stimulation of sacral roots in faecal incontinence and constipation.

  5. Surgery supported by biological techniques in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Sphincter-preserving surgery with pouch.Diagnosis and early treatment of anal canal carcinoma by High-Definition Anuscopy in patients with risk factors (HIV, MSM, etc.).

The colon unit at Fundación Jiménez Díaz is at the forefront of Cell Therapy research, pioneering the production of the first 100% Spanish medication. All this shows the team's strong research vocation.

TER CELTER CEL

We are part of a NETWORK with the rest of QuirónSalud's public hospitals, which allows our healthcare professionals to be highly trained in performing rare procedures. Decisions are also made in the Interhospital Tumour Committee.

Our daily clinical practice includes cutting-edge technologies: da Vinci Robot, dynamic transperineal ultrasound...

ROBOT 1ROBOT 1

We adapt new treatment protocols to our healthcare setting, such as organ-conserving surgery in treating rectal cancer.

We are strong advocates of shared decision-making with patients.

Finally, we consider training to be a key part of care, with advanced teaching programmes for medical students and surgical residents in their first years of practice.

Trauma and Emergency Surgery Unit

Fundación Jiménez Díaz's Multidisciplinary Emergency Surgery Unit provides comprehensive support for patients requiring urgent surgery, offering the highest quality of care in even the most urgent procedures.

Our team is made up of surgeons, resident physicians, nurses, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, digestive physicians, intensivists, interventional radiologists, nurses and auxiliary staff with specific knowledge and skills.

Our patients include:

  • Hospitalised patients who may also require urgent surgery.
  • Patients attending the Emergency Department with an acute surgical need at night or during the day.
  • Patients transferred from an outside hospital with a complicated surgical need requiring specialist surgical care.

Evidence-based medicine

The Emergency Trauma and Surgery Unit uses an evidence-based medicine approach to patient care that reduces variability in treatments while improving patient care quality and disease management outcomes, always with the patient at the heart of the process.

Continuity of patient care

Our specialised team provides round-the-clock patient care –from the Emergency Department to the operating room, and from the Intensive Care Unit and the hospital ward through to discharge–, with follow-up in outpatient clinics whenever necessary to ensure continuity of patient care.

Teaching and education

The Trauma and Emergency Surgery Unit is also dedicated to teaching medical students, resident physicians, fellows and nurses, helping them improve their understanding and provide the best care for the surgical patient.

Hepato-biliopancreatic surgery

Peritoneal Oncologic Surgery

The aim of the Peritoneal Oncologic Surgery Unit is to offer each patient comprehensive, personalised treatment thanks to an experienced multidisciplinary team of specialists. This unit's range of services includes the most innovative, advanced techniques for prophylactic and therapeutic treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis of different origin, including minimally invasive techniques and intra-abdominal chemotherapy systems.

Oesophagogastric and Bariatric Surgery

Fundación Jiménez Díaz's Oesophagogastric and Bariatric Surgery Unit was set up in 2010 and is dedicated to the surgical treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the oesophagus and stomach, as well as obesity surgery.

As a quality standard, the aim is currently to centralise complex, specific and uncommon conditions in specialist units, which is why one of the main reasons for setting up this type of unit is to ensure the best outcomes and the most modern treatments in patient care.

Our Unit performs the full spectrum of oesophagogastric and bariatric surgery, both at Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz and at Hospital General Universitario de Villalba, as well as oesophageal cancer surgery at Hospital Universitario Infanta Elena and Hospital Universitario Rey Juan Carlos. This allows surgeons specifically trained in a given pathology to significantly improve surgical outcomes, as is evident from our data.

90% of patients undergoing surgery in our Unit are operated on using minimally invasive techniques, following the guidelines of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery ("ERAS") protocol, which means an improvement in both their recovery and also in the quality of treatment received.

The Oesophagogastric and Bariatric Surgery Unit also pays special attention to training, teaching and research activities, and has a specific fellowship programme.

Endocrine Surgery and Breast Pathology

Breast-related symptoms or issues can cause significant anxiety among women. We prioritise prompt diagnosis in patients in order to reduce anxiety and alleviate their concerns. Patients without significant issues can be discharged with peace of mind, while Fundación Jiménez Díaz's Breast Unit offers comprehensive care, with a specific focus on diagnosing and treating breast cancer, for individuals with notable medical indications. We believe that a multidisciplinary approach and coordination between different specialists is essential, which is why our general surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, gynaecologists, plastic surgeons and psychologists all work together, meeting in a weekly committee and organising workshops on a monthly basis, thereby allowing patients to resolve any doubts, establish contact with other people in the same situation and know all the resources and support available to them. Patients' problems must be solved individually, quickly, efficiently and with human quality.

At a scientific level, several members of the unit coordinate events nationally and internationally and oversee a range of clinical trials, as well as regularly publishing scientific articles. Fundación Jiménez Díaz's Breast Unit is constantly being updated in order to offer the best treatments and technological advances.

In addition to breast conditions, surgeons in this section specialise in endocrine pathology, particularly related to the thyroid and parathyroid glands, managing over 250 cases every year with outstanding outcomes and effectiveness that rank among the best in the country. All the latest technological advancements are accessible for these types of procedures, including intraoperative neuromonitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the use of fluorescence to identify parathyroid glands in specific cases.

Teamwork is paramount, which is why monthly meetings are held involving endocrinologists, endocrine surgeons and other relevant specialities to discuss complex cases or those that present diagnostic or therapeutic uncertainties.

Our team of surgeons, in collaboration with nurses and other staff in the General Surgery Service, offers a wealth of experience, professionalism and effectiveness, while consistently providing compassionate care throughout the diagnosis and treatment process.
