The Ophthalmology Service’s research group (Innovation in Ophthalmology) is part of the FJD’s Health Research Institute (IIS-FJD), within the all-encompassing Health Technology and Innovation area. The main lines of research of the different groups involved in this area are: firstly, studying and characterising hereditary retinal and choroid diseases, in collaboration with the Genetics Service; secondly, researching accommodation and presbyopia and studying corneal biomechanics and corneal ectasias, in collaboration with the CSIC’s Optics Institute; and finally, studying and developing an experimental model of corneal endothelium and its response to different stimuli, in collaboration with the CSIC’s Centre for Molecular Biology.

The Ophthalmology Service's scientific production in terms of publications, funded research projects and patents can be consulted in the IIS-FJD and FJD reports.

In terms of teaching, the Ophthalmology Department coordinates and teaches the Ophthalmology course as part of the Medicine and Surgery Degree at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), and participates in doctoral programmes, supervising numerous doctoral theses. The Service has three accredited positions every year for medical residency training, which means the permanent presence of 12 Ophthalmology residents.
