Research:

Most physicians in the Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Department take part in research projects on locomotor system problems carried out within Fundación Jiménez Díaz's Research Institute. Many of these projects have public and/or private funding. The service's current lines of research include, most notably:

  • Spinal pathology (Lead Researcher Dr L Álvarez): Treatment of spinal problems in older patients. Evaluation of the results of lumbar and deformity surgery. Development of instruments for minimally invasive surgery. Cell therapy.
  • Shoulder pathology (Lead Researchers Dr E Calvo, Dr AM Foruria, Dr M Valencia, Dr G Luengo, Dr Morcillo): Comparative study of the Latarjet operation performed in open procedure and by arthroscopy in treating shoulder instability. Isokinetic and imaging study of the subscapularis muscle structure and function after Latarjet surgery. Study of the results of treatment of fractures of the proximal extremity of the humerus with augmented screws. Study of the management of acute post-operative pain in patients treated by shoulder arthroscopy in outpatient surgery. Embryology of the shoulder. Isokinetic study of rotator cuff function following implantation of a subacromial spacer. Clinical evolution of arthroscopic treatment of post-operative shoulder instability with Latarjet technique. Biological and cellular therapy in rotator cuff tears.
  • Elbow pathology (Lead Researcher Dr AM Foruria): Prognostic factors in simple and complex elbow instability. Results of treatment of complex elbow instability. Study of the results of elbow prostheses. Study of elbow anatomy for osteosynthesis implant design.
  • Hand and wrist pathology (Lead Researcher Dr J Cervera): Study of the results of surgical treatment of hand and wrist trauma.
  • Hip pathology (Lead Researcher Dr R Parrón): Study of the results of arthroscopic treatment of hip bursitis.
  • Knee pathology (Lead Researcher Dr D Sáez, Dr F López-Oliva): Biomechanical and clinical study of the patella fracture osteosynthesis system using cannulated screws and modified tension band. Analysis of the results of hip and knee revision surgery in patients with cemented stems. Study of Endomodel constrained prosthesis in revision knee surgery.
  • Pathology of the ankle and foot (Lead Researchers Dr A Auñón, Dr P Páramo): Comparative surgical study vs. conservative study in transsyndesmotic ankle fractures. Multicentre study on ankle infections after osteosynthesis.
  • Traumatology (Lead Researchers Dr I López Torres): Study of the treatment of tibial plateau fractures in older people. Outcome study of treatment of the "cut out" phenomenon with hemiarthroplasty in hip fracture patients.
  • Osteoporosis (Lead Researcher Dr E Calvo): Study of an at-distance follow-up model for hip fractures. Evaluation of the efficacy of the peer review method in the surgical treatment of hip fractures.
  • Arthrosis (Lead Researcher Dr F López-Oliva): Study of markers of early osteoarthritis
  • Osteoarticular infections (Lead Researchers Dr A Auñón, Dr I López-Torres): PCR in routine setting for diagnosis of PJI. Multicentre study for validation of the KLICC score.

Postgraduate Teaching

Specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Degree

The Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Service was one of the first services in Spain accredited for the training of interns and residents in the speciality. It currently has two yearly places for the training of specialists. Furthermore, it regularly welcomes resident physicians from various teaching units and hospitals, both in Spain and internationally, who are looking to round off their training in particular fields in the speciality.

Resident tutors: Dr M. Valencia, Dr JM. Argüello.

In-Service Training

  • The Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Department takes part in lifelong training activities in the speciality thanks to its participation in courses, congresses and national and international meetings. It has also been declared a "centre of excellence" and a "teaching centre" for training in arthroscopic surgery by the following scientific societies (Coordinator, Dr E. Calvo): the European Society for Surgery of the Knee and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow (SECEC-ESSSE), the Spanish Arthroscopy Association (AEA), and the Spanish Elbow and Shoulder Surgery Society (SECHC).
  • The service also has training programmes through temporary stays for surgeons specialising in the following areas: spinal surgery (Coordinator, Dr L. Álvarez), shoulder surgery (Coordinator, Dr E. Calvo), elbow surgery (Coordinator, Dr AM. Foruria), hand surgery (Coordinator Dr J. Cervera), hip surgery (Coordinator, Dr R. Parrón) and knee surgery (Coordinator, Dr D. Sáez). Through these agreements, the Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Service temporarily incorporates specialists wishing to broaden their training in one of these fields over a variable period of time.
  • In shoulder and elbow surgery, the service has a post-specialisation training programme (fellowship) that offers 2 yearly places (one lasting a year, and the other lasting 3 to 6 months). It is intended for national and international surgeons wishing to acquire a degree of super-specialisation in shoulder and elbow surgery.
  • Service recognised by LINK Hamburg as a Training Centre for Knee and Hip Surgery. This involves yearly visits by surgeons to see specific techniques, and a yearly:
    • Hip/knee surgery course.
    • Day of live surgery with surgeons from around the world.
